Does your child have “Shark teeth”? It’s a surprisingly common concern for many parents - and something we see often in early orthodontic treatment. This occurrence, otherwise called ectopic eruption, refers to when a child’s adult teeth erupt behind or in front of their baby teeth before they fall out. This often results in a double row of teeth, much like a shark’s grin. Although it can look alarming, it’s typically not painful for the child.

Let’s talk about what’s happening, why it happens, and what you can do.

Why Shark Teeth Happen

The most common time for shark teeth to show up is around ages 5 to 7, particularly with the lower front teeth (incisors). This happens when the permanent tooth doesn’t push directly beneath the baby tooth, missing the root and causing the adult tooth to grow in behind it. The baby tooth, meanwhile, stays stubbornly in place. In most cases, this happens due to the angle of eruption or lack of space in the mouth.

Will The Baby Teeth Fall Out On Their Own?

The body often corrects the issue within a few months as the roots of the baby teeth dissolve and the adult teeth continue to push upward. But if the baby tooth doesn’t budge after a few months, or if your child is experiencing discomfort or crowding, it’s worth getting an evaluation.

Leaving a retained baby tooth too long could cause alignment issues later, which may require more intensive orthodontic treatment down the line. A quick, proactive visit now can save time and money later.

What Is The Treatment For Shark Teeth?

If the baby tooth isn't loosening naturally, we may recommend a simple extraction. This minor procedure is fast and usually requires only one appointment. In rare cases, space maintainers or early braces might be suggested to guide proper alignment, especially if your child is showing signs of overcrowding.

Shark teeth aren’t usually a dental emergency, but they are a sign that your child’s dental development should be evaluated. With the right approach, we can ensure a smooth transition to a healthy smile. At Bartlett Orthodontics, we’re here to guide you through every stage with clarity, care, and confidence.
