However, orthodontic technology has evolved vastly in recent years, and adult braces are becoming more popular as more discreet solutions become available.

In this blog, we’ll explore the different types of braces available so that you can better understand which option would be best suited for you.

Traditional Metal Braces

With traditional braces, the orthodontist will adhere metal brackets onto each tooth and place a wire through each bracket. The correction process consists of the orthodontist tightening the wire bit by bit each session to force your teeth to move into their desired position. They can also be used to correct any dental scenario, unlike some of the later technologies that only work for specific candidates.

Invisalign™

A highly popular adult braces option is Invisalign™. These braces are actually less like traditional braces and more similar to a retainer. It uses a system consisting of aligners, or clear overlay templates, designed by a computer to add enough tension to move your teeth. The reason this option is so popular is that the aligners are completely transparent, making your adult braces virtually invisible to anyone unless they had to look very closely at your teeth.

Incognito™

For those who really don’t want anyone to know about their braces, Incognito™ braces are a fantastic option. Instead of the braces being in front of your teeth, the braces are actually behind your teeth ‒ virtually invisible to onlookers. These braces are designed using computer-aided technology (design & manufacturing), robotics and 3D printing technology.

Speed™ Braces

Speed™ Braces are similar to traditional braces, except that they are far smaller (about 3x smaller, in fact) than your traditional ones. They look almost like small jewels on your teeth and also don’t discolour like other types of ‘clear’ braces. Many people choose this option because the treatment period is shorter than other orthodontic methods.

Cosmetic Braces

You also have the option of electing for cosmetic braces. These are similar to traditional braces, except that they have clear ceramic brackets rather than metal ones. Since they are more discrete, they are quite a popular option for many. However, it should be noted that they do tend to discolour between your orthodontic visits and are also more fragile than the other options available.

Which Option Is Best For Me?

The truth is that there is no “one solution fits all” when it comes to orthodontics; the closest solution to that would be traditional braces. If you’re interested in getting adult braces, it’s best to see an orthodontist who can assess your specific needs and provide you with treatment options.
